What is stopping us from turning away abusive patients..?

When a patient or a relative get abusive at  hospital, my immediate reaction would be to dismiss the patient unless it’s an emergency. How often do we see a patient getting turned away by a hospital..? Why do doctors refrain from doing so..?  Is it the overwhelming kindness or fear of missing out..? I think it’s the latter in most cases.

An abusive patient getting extra benefits so that he or she would limit damage to the reputation, is the worst practice that has led to a cycle of more angry patients coming in. Have we created hostile environment by ourselves..? Why can’t we be more firm in dealing with such situations..? Do we react the same way at government set ups where such privileges are next to nothing. How does behaviour change happen according to circumstances..?

Talking about Indian scenario, patients must realise that doctors have the right to choose patients in routine cases but unfortunately they haven’t been made aware of this due to doctor’s unwillingness for various reasons and the patient always feels entitled in his own way. No doubt patient’s rights and grievances need to be addressed but in a civilized way. No amount of frustration could justify anger where a patient expects an immediate solution to a problem. Lack of individual or government responsibility is not doctor’s burden.

How many patients have basic manners to switch off phone during a consultation..? Whatever happens by chance is forgivable but carrying no sense of guilt of uncivilized actions has greater repercussions. Why do we allow such atrocities to happen..? It’s time to remind and press upon patient responsibilities as much as they talk about how selfless doctor’s profession should be.
